Who is Vlad?

Hi there! My name is Vlad Lovin and I’m excited to have you here. At the time of this writing (June 2022), I am 17 years old and I just finished my junior year at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. I’m not sure where I’ll go after I finish high school, but I would like to continue to serve the people and the community in one way or another.

This page provides a space where I will log all the challenges that I am going to take on in order to earn your sponsorship. I will document each of them and make you the witness of my undertakings, so you too will be vicariously part of them. You will suffer with me when it gets rough on the trail, and rejoice together when our actions bring joy to the lives of the children fostered by Romanian Children’s Relief.

Why do I do this, you may ask?

I’m passionate about service. I believe service brings the most personal satisfaction. And I believe it is the only way one can become a leader. As I write these lines, I am in Vanderburg Hall Dormitory at Air Force Academy, where I participate in a one-week summer seminary. I feel humbled by being in the shadow of these airmen and walking in the footsteps of so many heroes of our nation. Similarly, I feel humbled when I am given the opportunity to hand a bowl of hot soup to a homeless person in the shelters or every time I play with children with special needs and make them smile. A true leader listens first, learns and serves, and then empowers and leads by example. I am obviously not there yet but I will do my best.

Romanian Children’s Relief is a perfect example of selfless dedication to the well-being of less fortunate children. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to help them with as little as I can, and I invite you to do the same. What makes my connection to RCR even stronger is my Romanian heritage for which I am proud and grateful. I look forward to spending some time with the children at RCR’s center in Bistrita and also meeting the amazing caregivers who dedicate their lives and commit wholeheartedly to those kids.

The Challenge

500 miles bike ride on Via Transilvanica. It is a trail of almost 1000 miles crossing Romania from north to south. Think of Appalachian Trail but a little shorter. I like to say that Via Transilvanica is more than just a trail, it represents a whole community that came together to pursue this impressive endeavor and offer everyone the chance to experience the unspoiled beauty of the Romanian backcountry. Please join me on this trip and follow me on YouTube and Instagram. If you like what you see, please consider donating to the Romanian Children’s Relief Fund. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Let’s work together on this!  See you on the trail!
